AYAYI is a photo-realistic 3D virtual human who appeared on the Chinese app Xiaohongshu (RED) in May 2021. She is a project of Shanghai Ranmai Technology, developed with the Japanese virtual-human company Aww Inc., which also makes imma.
The confirmation comes from her co-developer. Aww's press release of July 19, 2021 announced "the virtual human AYAYI", built with its virtual-human technology, and Aww's own site lists her among its virtual humans as the centerpiece of a project with Ranmai.
We did not find a statement on Ranmai's own channels, and her RED profile's bio was empty in an archived copy from August 12, 2026.
Why people ask: she posted for about a month before she was presented as virtual, and her images were made to look like photographs. Press reported a brand event with Guerlain in Shanghai in June 2021 and her role as a "digital employee" for Alibaba's Tmall Super Brand Day in September 2021.
By March 2024 she was posting rarely, with about 120,000 RED followers, according to the tech site SSPAI.
